This injectable medication is Phytomenadione, also known as Vitamin K1. It is a synthetic form of this fat-soluble vitamin and is administered via intramuscular (IM) or intravenous (IV) injection. Its primary use is in the treatment and prevention of bleeding disorders, particularly those related to a lack of proper blood clotting. The body requires Vitamin K to produce several key proteins that are essential for hemostasis, the process that stops bleeding.
The most common and critical use of Phytomenadione is for the prophylaxis and treatment of Hemorrhagic Disease of the Newborn (HDN). Newborn babies are naturally deficient in Vitamin K because it does not cross the placenta efficiently and their sterile gut has not yet developed the bacteria that produce it.
Beyond HDN, Phytomenadione injection is also used to reverse the effects of certain anticoagulant (blood-thinning) medications, particularly warfarin, in cases of overdose or when emergency surgery is required. It can also be used to treat bleeding disorders that arise from other conditions that cause a Vitamin K deficiency, such as severe malnutrition or liver disease.
K-VIT Injection (Vitamin K1) is used to manage and relieve symptoms related to Vitamin K deficiency and bleeding disorders. Recognizing these symptoms early aids in timely intervention and effective treatment.
