This injectable medication is Phytomenadione, also known as Vitamin K1. It is a synthetic form of this fat-soluble vitamin and is administered via intramuscular (IM) or intravenous (IV) injection. Its primary use is in the treatment and prevention of bleeding disorders, particularly those related to a lack of proper blood clotting. The body requires Vitamin K to produce several key proteins that are essential for hemostasis, the process that stops bleeding.

The most common and critical use of Phytomenadione is for the prophylaxis and treatment of Hemorrhagic Disease of the Newborn (HDN). Newborn babies are naturally deficient in Vitamin K because it does not cross the placenta efficiently and their sterile gut has not yet developed the bacteria that produce it.

Beyond HDN, Phytomenadione injection is also used to reverse the effects of certain anticoagulant (blood-thinning) medications, particularly warfarin, in cases of overdose or when emergency surgery is required. It can also be used to treat bleeding disorders that arise from other conditions that cause a Vitamin K deficiency, such as severe malnutrition or liver disease.

Symptoms of Infections K-VIT Injection Treats

K-VIT Injection (Vitamin K1) is used to manage and relieve symptoms related to Vitamin K deficiency and bleeding disorders. Recognizing these symptoms early aids in timely intervention and effective treatment.

Common Symptoms Include:

  • Bruising, Unexplained or widespread bruising on the body.
  • Bleeding from the umbilical cord stump, Persistent oozing of blood from the area where the umbilical cord was attached.
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding, Blood in the stool (which may appear black and tarry) or vomit.
  • Internal bleeding, This is the most dangerous symptom, which can be internal and not immediately visible.
  • Intracranial hemorrhage (brain bleed), The most severe and life-threatening symptom.

Uses of Bleeding Disorders and Vitamin K Deficiency:

  • Prophylaxis of Hemorrhagic Disease of the Newborn (HDN): It is routinely administered as a single dose to all newborns to prevent HDN, a life-threatening bleeding disorder caused by vitamin K deficiency at birth.
  • Treatment of Hemorrhagic Disease of the Newborn (HDN): It is given to infants who develop HDN to correct the deficiency and stop active bleeding.
  • Reversal of Anticoagulant Overdose: It is used to quickly reverse the blood-thinning effects of certain oral anticoagulants, particularly warfarin, in cases of overdose or before emergency surgery.
  • Management of Vitamin K Deficiency Bleeding: It treats bleeding disorders caused by an underlying vitamin K deficiency due to conditions such as severe malnutrition, malabsorption syndromes (like celiac disease or cystic fibrosis), or liver disease.
  • Correction of Hypoprothrombinemia: It is used to correct a low level of prothrombin (a key blood clotting protein) due to a lack of vitamin K, regardless of the cause.
  • Emergency Hemostasis: In certain medical emergencies where a bleeding disorder is suspected due to a lack of clotting factors, it may be administered to help restore the body's ability to form clots.
